Women Aware responds to Ray Rice controversy

Domestic violence is deeply rooted in our communities. In the US, 1 in 3 women has experienced physical violence by an intimate partner. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of intimate partner violence each year. In Middlesex County alone there were 5,143 domestic violence offenses in 2011. Women Aware receives over 6,000 calls for help annually. We serve over 2,000 women and shelter more than 200 in our Safe House alone each year.

The recent incident surrounding the Rutgers and NFL star Ray Rice, brought to national attention a grim social issue that is often swept under the rug. Several media sources reached out to Women Aware to draw on its 34 years of expertise in this area.
