On May 1st, Women Aware was proud to honor three strong supporters from our community at our first volunteer recognition event, A Night of Celebration, held at the Piscataway Senior Center. Marian Haas, of East Brunswick and Ella Mae Mitchell, of New Brunswick, were presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their years of service on Women Aware’s Board of Directors, and their dedication to serving survivors of domestic violence and their children. Linda Hrycenko, of East Brunswick, received the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award for her support of our mission by volunteering weekly in our administrative office.
Middlesex County Freeholder Kenneth Armwood kicked off the event with a personal account of his volunteer experience at Women Aware while in college, and was followed by a warm welcome from Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler.
The event celebrated over 200 volunteers, who in 2012, contributed the financial equivalent of $142,622 in service to Women Aware and the families we serve. Our volunteers serve in several capacities, including Domestic Violence Response Team members, volunteer Legal Advocates, pro-bono attorneys, members of our Speakers’ Bureau, gift wrappers at our Holiday Gift Shop, and much more. The dedication of our volunteers is evident even in our Development Committee, who dedicated their time to plan and execute the event. In fact, committee member Sandy Soriano generously donated her time, talent, and treasure to cater a delicious feast for all in attendance.
Women Aware was honored to host such an important event to thank and acknowledge our volunteers. With their support, we inch closer to achieving our mission of ending domestic violence in the lives of women, children, and men.
