    PRESS RELEASE

The Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB) in conjunction with Women Aware has announced the start of the “Esperanza Domestic Violence Project” on April 6, 2009. This initiative has been developed to empower Latina victims affected by domestic violence in the greater New Brunswick area. The initiative has two goals; to implement a social marketing campaign in the City of New Brunswick to educate and create awareness on the issues of domestic violence, entitled the “Orquídea Campaign”. This campaigns targeting Latina victims of domestic violence honors the memory of Ms. Orquídea Tejada, who was living and working in the New Brunswick area when she was killed by her husband in 2001. The second goal is to provide counseling and case management. To provide these services, PRAB has developed a partnership with Women Aware, who has hired a Bilingual/Bicultural Domestic Violence Legal Advocate. Through crisis assessment and intervention services, the advocate will assist and connect victims to community resources.

According to Ms. Phyllis Adams, Executive Director of Women Aware, “this project is an excellent partnership with PRAB and other community agencies to ensure that Latina victims of domestic violence break the cycle of domestic abuse.”
